What Actually Moves Blood Sugar
Before anything in a capsule, four everyday things move the needle further. Worth knowing what you are adding a supplement to.
Portion size of the fast stuff
White bread, white rice, potatoes, pastry, sugary drinks and most breakfast cereals all break down quickly and arrive in the blood in a rush. Halving the portion of the fastest item on the plate does more, measurably, than almost anything you can add to the meal.
Nobody has to give these up. Making them the smaller part of a plate rather than the bulk of it is the whole adjustment.
What you eat them with
The same bread behaves differently depending on its company. Protein, fat and fibre all slow the passage of a meal through the stomach, which flattens the peak that follows. Toast alone and toast with eggs are not the same event.
This is the cheapest change on the list. It does not remove anything from your diet; it just adds something alongside.
Order on the plate
There is reasonable evidence that eating the vegetables and protein part of a meal before the starch part reduces the size of the rise that follows. It costs nothing, it is easy to remember, and it changes nothing about what you cook.
Ten minutes of movement
Working muscle pulls glucose out of the blood without needing much insulin to do it. A short walk in the half hour after a meal measurably flattens the curve, and it does not need to be brisk or long. Washing up, walking the dog, going to the shop for milk all count.
Sleep, which nobody wants to hear about
One short night measurably reduces how well cells respond to insulin the next day. A run of short nights compounds it. If your sleep has collapsed and you are trying to judge whether a supplement is helping, you are measuring in a storm.
Where a supplement sits in this
Underneath all four. The label wording on products in this category is support alongside diet and exercise, and that is not lawyer-speak for nothing. It is an honest description of the size of the effect relative to the things above. A capsule added on top of the four is a reasonable thing to try. A capsule instead of them is not.
