Goji berries, or wolfberries, grow on a nightshade-family shrub related to tomatoes and peppers. Ningxia in northern China supplies the overwhelming share of the commercial crop.
Chinese medicine has long used them, mostly for eyesight and vitality. Modern nutritional interest centres on carotenoids, since goji carries more zeaxanthin than almost any other edible thing.
What the research shows
What goji has going for it is nutritional density rather than drug-like behaviour. The zeaxanthin content is genuinely high and dietary zeaxanthin has reasonable support for eye health, which is a different subject from blood sugar.
A group of compounds called Lycium barbarum polysaccharides has drawn laboratory attention, including animal work on glucose metabolism. Human trials with glucose outcomes are few, small, and conducted with food quantities of dried fruit or juice.
Evidence grade: Small
Very little human evidence for a blood sugar outcome.
What that means inside GlycoAid
Thirteenth on the list, second lightest. This is the third ingredient graded Small for blood sugar evidence. Its honest description here is antioxidant and nutritional rather than glycaemic.
Everything above describes goji berry as a named substance at doses used in published work. It does not describe GlycoAid, which declares one combined 500 mg covering all fourteen ingredients and publishes no individual amount.
Cautions and interactions
- Goji interacts with warfarin, with several case reports of raised INR in people taking both.
- It belongs to the nightshade family, relevant to the small group sensitive to that group of plants.
- It can add to the effect of glucose and blood pressure medication.
- Allergic reactions are reported occasionally.
Questions About Goji Berry
Three that come in most often about this ingredient.
Is goji a superfood?
It is nutritionally dense, especially in zeaxanthin. Superfood is marketing language rather than a category.
Does it lower blood sugar?
Human evidence for that is very limited.
Is the warfarin interaction real?
Yes, and there are several case reports behind it.
